FOR2722 webinar series on musculoskeletal health

The DFG Research Unit FOR2722 "Novel molecular determinants for musculoskeletal extracellular matrix homeostasis - a systemic approach" in Cologne are organising a series of seminars with national and international speakers presenting work in musculoskeletal health and ECM homeostasis. The Seminars are live and free to attend, and feature a get-together for PhD students after the seminar, to facilitate face-to-face interactions that are essential for building relationships and forging collaborations with internal and external researchers.

The European Calcified Tissue Society (ECTS) are organising a webinar entitled "Mechanical loading and bone development" on the 22nd of January at 4pm CET, with live Q&A session with the audience.

Abstract

Due to the short levers muscles work with, muscular forces produced during physical activity provide by far the largest routine stresses which the bones experience. Bone readily adapts to this loading, such that physical activity is arguably the key determinant of postnatal bone shape and structure. Despite this, the efficacy of exercise interventions to improve bone health in adults has been limited. During this session we will discuss the associations described above, and factors that may explain the inability to translate our knowledge in this area into clinical therapies. We will discuss how clinicians can safely advise on physical activity, and conclude by examining the important role that the earliest exposures to muscular action prenatally and in infancy have in determining bone mass.

We have achieved a lot in our second year as a consortium. Our DCs have been on several secondments, presented their data at national and international meetings, and contributed to several publications. We have had a great annual meeting in Vienna, a successful summer school in Lyon, and we are looking forward to our next annual meeting in Krakow.
